the kitchen

So let's start in the kitchen. When we first saw the house, we sneaked around back and peeked through the picture window. In the kitchen we saw the 1940s metal kitchen cabinets, complete with a recessed shelf to hold your aluminum foil. The real appeal was that the label read "St. Charles". I took this as a sign that the house was meant to be ours. Our youngest is named Charles, Charlie. Although the upper doors had been replaced with wood composite, the cabinets were still metal, avocado green inside. Wish I had a picture of that!

Here is something of what the kitchen looked like when we moved in:

I took these off zillow... As you can see it left a lot to be desired. So fast forward a few years and this is what we did...

Replaced the old walls in the dining room. Added new recessed lighting.
Took a wall down between the kitchen and dining room.

Took out lots of cabinets.

Added wood flooring to match the original dining room.

Added an island as our primary seating.

Added new cabinets.

Relocated the fridge.

Tile backsplash. No more linoleum!

Butcher block countertops.

Appliances.

And so this is the space that holds all our dishes, both the ones I make for family and friends, for every night dinners, and the dishes that make their way into our house. They are an eclectic mix of old and very old and somewhat new. I hope you enjoy! I will continue to add new postings as I sort through pictures and recipes. Thanks for visiting!
